Hanging by a Wire Synopsis
Hanging by a Wire is a 2026 documentary thriller film directed by Mohammed Ali Naqvi and written by Naqvi and Bilal Sami. A co-production of Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the film documents the real-life Battagram cable car incident that took place in northwest Pakistan in August 2023.
The documentary follows eight passengers, including schoolchildren, who become trapped in a makeshift cable car while travelling across a mountainous valley on their way to school. When two supporting cables snap, the passengers are left suspended approximately 900 feet above a ravine, with no safe way to reach the ground.
As news of the incident spreads, rescue teams and local volunteers work to bring everyone to safety. The film examines the rescue operation, the challenges faced by those involved, and the experiences of the passengers during the emergency.
Hanging by a Wire premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2026, before receiving a digital release on October 13, 2026. The documentary was also selected as Pakistan’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.
