Synopsis
Surgeons: A Matter of Life or Death Season 4 is the fourth season of the British medical documentary series that follows surgeons performing complex and potentially life-saving operations at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
The series provides access to the hospital’s 73 operating theatres, documenting the work of surgical teams as they treat patients with serious medical conditions. Each episode focuses on individual patients, the procedures they need and the decisions doctors must make before and during surgery.
The fourth season begins with Emma, a 20-year-old student born with Apert syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects the development of the skull and face. Surgeon Jaime Grant prepares to perform a complex facial reconstruction procedure known as Le Fort III, which aims to reposition Emma’s facial bones and improve their alignment.
Elsewhere in the hospital, Sue faces another major operation after doctors discover two aggressive spinal tumours nearly 20 years after her original surgery. Surgeon Mel Grainger must attempt to remove the tumours while reducing the risks of serious bleeding and paralysis.
Throughout the season, the documentary follows patients and medical professionals as they prepare for difficult procedures, manage surgical risks and deal with the challenges of recovery.
