Plot Overview

The movie begins in 1941 in Germany. Colonel Hans Landa is sent to meet a French family suspected of hiding Jews in their basement. Landa’s interrogation tactics are nothing less than intimidating, and this scene sets the stage for the brutality that lies ahead. Fast forward to 1944, where we meet Lieutenant Aldo Raine, an American Army commander who, along with a group of Jewish-American soldiers, is sent on a mission to deep in Nazi-occupied France. Armed with baseball bats and a desire to create as much chaos as possible, the “Basterds” wreak havoc on the Nazi-occupied country to the horror of the local population.

The two plots find closure when the “Basterds” and Colonel Landa team up to destroy a theater where Hitler and several high-ranking Gestapo officials are planning to watch the premiere of a Nazi propaganda feature. This is a major part of the movie that keeps the viewer on edge until the very end, as the stakes are no longer just about the lives of these characters but the whole world’s future.

Themes

The themes of Inglourious Basterds are both multi-faceted and profound. One prevalent theme of the film is violence. The film is well known for its often excessive and graphic violence, which works to heighten the stakes of the conflict. This is especially evident in scenes such as the dance hall massacre where the “Basterds” hunt and shoot SS officers in cold blood before a horrified French crowd.

On a similar note, revenge is another significant theme in the movie. This is emphasized from the beginning, as the “Basterds” plan to have revenge for the horrors that the Jews suffered at the hands of the Nazis. However, vengeance is also seen in the character of Colonel Landa. As a German who wants to avenge his country’s defeat, Landa will go to any lengths to achieve his goal.

Finally, the film also explores the idea of power and control. The Nazis are depicted as a powerful force throughout the movie, controlling the lives of the locals through oppressive violence and fear. This aspect of power is also seen when Colonel Landa interrogates the French family or when the “Basterds” are in charge of a small village.
