The cast of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Daniel Radcliffe portrayed the character of Harry Potter, an 11-year-old orphan living with his unwelcoming aunt, uncle, and cousin. Harry discovers his fame as a wizard who survived the murder of his parents by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort when he receives an acceptance letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Even before the open casting sessions took place, director Chris Columbus had his eyes set on Radcliffe after seeing his performance in the BBC’s production of David Copperfield.

However, the casting director initially informed Columbus that Radcliffe’s protective parents were hesitant to let him take on the role, which eventually led to her resignation. It was only after Heyman and Columbus met Radcliffe and his parents at a production of Stones in His Pockets in London in 2000 that they managed to convince them that their son would be well-protected from media intrusion. J.K. Rowling herself approved of Radcliffe’s casting, stating that she couldn’t envision a better Harry after seeing his screen test. Radcliffe was reportedly paid £1 million for the film, although he regarded the fee as relatively unimportant.

Notably, William Moseley, later cast as Peter Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia series, also auditioned for the role. Additionally, the Saunders triplets appeared as Harry as a baby.

Rupert Grint played the role of Ron Weasley, Harry’s loyal best friend at Hogwarts and a member of the Weasley wizarding family. Grint’s love for the series and his distinctive ginger hair led him to believe that he would be a perfect fit for the part. In a creative attempt to secure the role, he sent in a video of himself rapping about his desire to play the character after seeing a Newsround report about the open casting. The casting team was impressed and invited him for a meeting. Although Thomas Brodie-Sangster also auditioned for the role, he was ultimately not chosen.

Emma Watson portrayed Hermione Granger, Harry’s other best friend and the intellectual powerhouse of the trio. Watson’s name was brought to the attention of the casting agents by her Oxford theatre teacher. She underwent a rigorous selection process, including more than five interviews, before landing the part. Despite her seriousness during the audition, she never believed she had a chance of getting the role. However, her self-confidence and standout performance outshined the thousands of other girls who had applied.

Other notable cast members include John Cleese as Nearly Headless Nick, the ghost of Gryffindor House; Robbie Coltrane as Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant gamekeeper of Hogwarts; Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick, the Charms Master and head of Ravenclaw House, along with two other roles in the film; Richard Griffiths as Vernon Dursley, Harry’s Muggle uncle; Richard Harris as Albus Dumbledore, the esteemed Headmaster of Hogwarts; Ian Hart as Quirinus Quirrell, the stuttering Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher; John Hurt as Mr. Ollivander, the highly regarded wandmaker; Alan Rickman as Severus Snape, the Potions Master and head of Slytherin House; Fiona Shaw as Petunia Dursley, Harry’s Muggle aunt; Maggie Smith as Minerva McGonagall, the Deputy Headmistress and head of Gryffindor; and Julie Walters as Molly Weasley, Ron’s caring mother who helps Harry find Platform

The film also featured a range of talented actors in various roles, such as Zoë Wanamaker as Madame Hooch, the flying instructor; Tom Felton as Draco Malfoy, Harry’s rival; and many others who contributed to the magical world
