May the 4th Be With You

 

In case you haven’t heard, not only is May the 4th (also known as: Star Wars Day!) coming up but later this month (Friday, May 25th, to be exact) Solo: A Star Wars Story is slated to hit theaters. This will be a second Star Wars standalone film, set to be a kind of origin story for everybody’s favorite space smuggler and swaggering swashbuckler: Han Solo.

To get you up to speed, or just give you an excuse to watch these all again again, here’s a list of all nine Star Wars films, all available streaming online (in some form or another) right now.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

Chronologically, this is the first movie in the Star Wars story, but it was actually the fourth movie released. The Phantom Menace tells the story of a young Tatooine boy named Anakin Skywalker, who comes across two Jedis called Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, as Naboo is slated to be invaded by the Trade Federation.

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

Ten years after the events of The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones follows Anakin Skywalker, now a teen-aged Jedi apprentice. Obi-Wan discovers that Jango Fett is being cloned by order of a lone Jedi, and uncovers a threat to the life of Senator Amidala. He and Anakin are assigned to protect Amidala and attempt to stop the clone wars.

Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

Three years after the events of Attack of the Clones, with the clone wars still waging and Obi-Wan on a mission to dispatch of General Grievous, Anakin begins having visions of his wife Padme (pregnant with Luke and Leia) dying during childbirth. His fears drive him closer to Senator Palpatine who is secretly a Sith Lord, and brings Anakin closer to the dark side.

I know! I’m sorry for teasing you but this one hasn’t come out in theaters so don’t go thinking it’s available for streaming yet. I put this here just for the sake of education. This is about the spot where Solo, the Han Solo prequel, will go in the chronology of the rest of the films. It takes place quite some time after Revenge of the Sith, but before the events of Rogue One. Supposedly, this installment will explore how Han came to know both Chewbacca and fan favorite Lando Calrissian. Alden Ehrenreich will attempt to fill the shoes of Han Solo.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The first of three planned (originally, anyway) standalone Star Wars films to come out, Rogue One is set just before the events of A New Hope. While it is interconnected with the events in Episode IV, it is a standalone story that can be told independently of the rest of the series. The film follows Jyn Erso, the daughter of a research scientist who is being forced against his will to create a super weapon for the Empire. Jyn assembles a crew of misfits, each with their own specific talents, in order to rescue her father.

Star Wars: A New Hope

Originally known as “Star Wars: A New Hope,” the identifier “Episode IV” was not added until later. Princess Leia leaves a clue inside of a droid named R2-D2 for Obi-Wan Kenobi. When Luke Skywalker discovers the clue while living on Tatooine with his aunt and uncle, he attempts to return the droid to the Jedi master and he, along with Leia and smuggler Han Solo, becomes an integral part of helping to destroy Darth Vader’s superweapon, the Death Star. He also begins on his path to becoming a Jedi.

Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back

With the threat of the Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader looming, Obi-Wan sends a young and impressionable Luke to train under Yoda on Dagobah. With his friends Leia and Han Solo in danger, Luke is forced to cut his training short in order to face off against his greatest enemy: Darth Vader.

Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi

Beginning immediately after the events of Episode V, Return of the Jedi begins with a daring rescue mission, freeing Han Solo from his carbon freeze. Invigorated by this success, Luke embarks on what could very well be a suicide mission in an effort to turn his father, Darth Vader (Anakin), back to the light side of the force.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

The Force Awakens is set about 30 years after the events of The Return of the Jedi. Beginning much in the same way as A New Hope, a droid carrying vital information, this one by the name of BB-8, is abandoned on the desolate planet Jakku and picked up by a scavenger who goes by the name of Rey. Meanwhile, an indoctrinated and traumatized stormtrooper called Finn abandons his post with the help of BB-8’s owner, gifted rebel pilot Poe Dameron. Together, the three lead the charge against Supreme Leader Snoke and Kylo-Ren with the help of some familiar faces and an unexpected revelation.

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Last Jedi

Under the tutelage of a self-exiled Luke, Rey becomes more powerful in the force and forms an unlikely bond with Kylo Ren. Rey and Kylo Ren join forces to face off against Supreme Leader Snoke, while Luke comes to the aid of the desperate rebellion forces.
