12 Shows To Watch When You Finish The Good Place

NBC Universal

The wait for season three of NBC’s brilliant The Good Place is going to be too forkin’ long, guys. After ending season two with another creatively fearless capper, there’s no way fans aren’t wondering what’s next for Eleanor, Chidi, Michael, and the rest of the gang. Sadly, there’s no way to make season three get here any faster. The only alternative is to check out some shows that will remind you of The Good Place.

Granted, that’s no easy task, because The Good Place is very much its own thing. However, there are a few shows out there that have delved into the nature of goodness or that have been designed to make you laugh at their inventiveness. These 12 shows are exactly what The Good Place fans need to make it through the hiatus.

1. The Leftovers

Don’t expect to spend much time laughing at this dense drama, but like The Good Place, The Leftovers confronts ideas relating to theology, the meaning of life, and other heady matters with a unique storytelling structure and voice. It’s not always an easy watch, but it is a rewarding one.

2. Lost

Say what you will about the ending, but few shows have ever pondered the big question of what does it all mean with quite the same audacity of Lost. The show is sometimes heartbreaking, often funny, and one hell of a ride, even if the destination never quite lives up to the trip.

3. Parks & Recreation

Before Mike Schur created The Good Place, he gave the world Parks and Recreation. If it’s the humor of Eleanor’s adventures that makes The Good Place so appealing to you, then it’s time to visit Pawnee.

4. Community

No comedy has ever taken more risks or created more successful stunt episodes (they were basically all stunt episodes) than Community. Sit back and enjoy the hilariousness — just maybe skip the gas leak year (season four).

5. Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Schur’s third sitcom is just as much fun as his other two, and the cop comedy also creates a profound family feel that The Good Place viewers will love.

6. Dead Like Me

As a reaper, Georgia Lass has to usher people to the great beyond — but she’s asked not to question the why to her job. The result is a somewhat uneven look at the grim business of moving on after death.

7. This Is Us

Eleanor would probably think it’s schmaltzy, but NBC’s hit family drama has a puzzle box aspect while also tapping into the best of humanity. Go ahead and let the feel good TV wash over you — just don’t be shocked when you end up weeping through every episode.

8. Pushing Daisies

Quirky, slyly sarcastic, and a unique take on life after death — what more could The Good Place fans ask for?

9. Cheers

Before he was Michael, Ted Danson played an iconic bartender named Sam Malone. Buckle up for 11 seasons worth of Danson goodness, Norm greetings, and exquisite comedy.

10. Twin Peaks

Visit the strange world of Twin Peaks. It’s a trippy show to be sure, but there’s quite a bit of philosophy buried inside the series’ twisty narrative.

11. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Kimmy’s story has a dark beginning, but the optimistic heroine takes on her second chance at life with joy, silliness, and a desire to learn as much as she can about life beyond the bunker.

12. You, Me, And The Apocalypse

One of the most underrated comedies in recent memory, You, Me, and the Apocalypse examines what happens when you know you have just 30 days to live. The series hits on the big questions of life, while also serving up serious hilarity. Yes, you have to buy it, but it’s worth every penny.
