A24, an independent distributor and production company, has come to the forefront of independent cinema in less than a decade. Since distributing its first films back in 2013, A24 has gone on to win a number of accolades for its projects, including multiple Academy Awards, with films such as Moonlight and Lady Bird. Now that the companies’ catalog has expanded from the big screen to the small screen, it’s time to take a look at where to watch A24’s essential indie movies & TV shows streaming, including Euphoria And Uncut Gems. Here a few of our favorites, but be sure to check out our hand-curated list for more of A24’s offerings.
The Witch
Robert Eggers impressed critics with his 2015 debut, The Witch. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Ineson, Egger’s masterfully directs a tale of horror based in religion through the lens of a small, excommunicated family of Puritans in 1630s New England. Eggers is known for going to painstaking lengths to keep his period pieces accurate (see another A24 essential, The Lighthouse), and The Witch is no different. Much of the dialog is actually pulled straight from historical documents of the time. Check out this A24 horror masterpiece and on fuboTV, Kanopy or Showtime, where it’s streaming right now.
Uncut Gems
The Safdie Brothers followed up their anxiety inducing 2017 film Good Time with Uncut Gems. This high octane flick stars Adam Sandler as Howard Ratner, a Diamond District jeweler with a gambling addition. The film follows Ratner’s escapades and questionable decision-making through 2010 New York City. Uncut Gems went on to become one of A24’s most profitable films, in addition to earning some well-deserved critical acclaim. Sandler fans can check out Uncut Gems on Netflix, where it’s currently streaming.
Hereditary
Over the years A24 has crafted an image of distributing more… unique films. Ari Aster‘s 2018 family drama Hereditary fits that bill to a T. The foreboding tone, paranoia and intensity in Hereditary is hard to find anywhere else. In true Aster fashion, he doesn’t hold back on the more gruesome aspects, either. Without spoiling too much (seriously, go in blind of you can), Hereditary follows the Graham family as they navigate a family tragedy. Watch Toni Collette and Alex Wolff in this horror hit on fuboTV, Showtime or Kanopy, where it’s streaming now.
The Florida Project
Sean Baker‘s The Florida Project follows a single mother and her daughter as they live in the shadow of Walt Disney Land. It’s heartbreaking, beautiful and hilarious. Willem Dafoe was eventually nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category at a number of awards ceremonies for his performance as hotel manager Bobby Hicks. Some even consider his work in The Florida Project to be the finest of his career. Watch The Florida Project on Netflix, Kanopy or Hoopla, where it’s streaming right now.
Euphoria
As A24 has seen so much success on the big screen, it was only a matter of time before the distributor got in on the television scene. Typically a distributor, A24 ended up producing Euphoria, starring Zendaya, Maude Apatow, Hunter Schafer and more. The teen drama follows a group of teens as they encounter everything from sex and partying to love and friendship. The series was praised by critics and has already been renewed for a second season. If you haven’t yet, be sure to check out Euphoria on HBO, where it’s streaming right now.
The Lobster
Depending on how weird you want to get, The Lobster may be right up your alley. In my opinion, it’s the most bizarre feature on this list, but that’s not surprising considering it’s the work of Dogtooth director Yorgos Lanthimos. The director was a key contributor to the ‘Greek Weird Wave’ and is known for his distinct style. Starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and John C. Reilly, The Lobster follows a group of people who must find a romantic partner within 45 days. Failure will result in being transformed into an animal and sent to a mysterious place called The Woods. If that sounds weird enough for you, just wait until you watch it. Good stuff here, pure A24. Check out The Lobster and all of its Lanthimos glory on fuboTV, Kanopy, Hoopla or Showtime, where it’s streaming right now.
Lady Bird
What’s any self respecting A24 list without Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird? This coming-of-age story starring Saoirse Ronan, Lucas Hedges and Timothée Chalamet earned a whopping five Academy Award nominations. Set in 2002, Lady Bird follows Christine McPherson, played by Ronan, as she struggles with her upbringing in Sacramento, California. The impressive debut from director Great Gerwig remains one of the most widely celebrated A24 films to date. Check out Lady Bird on Netflix or Kanopy, where it’s streaming right now,
Moonlight
At last we’ve made it to Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight, one of the quintessential A24 films. Produced and distributed by A24, Moonlight was widely praised by critics, earning 8 nominations at the 89th Academy Awards. Moonlight follows Chiron, a child from Miami, at three different stages in life. The film focuses on Chiron as he comes to terms with his own sexuality, upbringing and identity. Widely considered one of the best movies of the last twenty years, Moonlight is a must watch for any A24 fan. Check it out on fuboTV, Kanopy, Hoopla or Showtime, where it’s streaming right now.
