We Can’t Wait For These Shows To Come Back This Year

"Good Girls" returns from hiatus in March.
“Good Girls” returns from hiatus in March.

Ah, the dreaded mid-season hiatus. For the first few weeks, it always seems doable. A total piece of cake. But after the holidays, fans tend to get a little desperate. We start chomping at the bit at every promo image, every teaser trailer, every spoilerish tweet. And let’s not forget the cable and streaming trend of forcing fans to wait extraordinary amounts of time for the next season, a year, sometimes more. While it may be necessary, it just seems cruel and is at times almost too much to bear.

Of course, all of that is forgiven by the time premiere day rolls around. Here are 8 shows we just can’t wait to return in 2019.

Game of Thrones
Type: Action & Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Science-Fiction
Release Date: 2011
Starring: Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

This sweeping tale has been riveting audiences for almost 10 years. (Can you believe?) With the 8ths and final season premiering this April, the end of the last agonizing hiatus is full of mixed emotions.

Grey’s Anatomy
Type: Drama, Romance
Release Date: 2005
Starring: Ellen Pompeo, Giacomo Gianniotti, Justin Chambers

Returning this week (Thursday, Jan. 17th – set your clocks), Grey’s Anatomy went into this mid-season hiatus with another of its infamous cliffhangers, and this one left Meredith stranded in an elevator with DeLuca. While the show has seen its ups and downs since the loss of McDreamy, few things have excited fans as much as the way that Andrew DeLuca looks at Meredith Grey.

This is Us
Type: Drama, Comedy
Release Date: 2016
Starring: Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown

Speaking of shows that always has fans holding their breath, another favorite coming back this week is This is Us. Tune in on Tuesday, Jan. 15th for this tearjerker.

Good Girls
Type: Comedy, Drama, Crime
Release Date: 2018
Starring: Christina Hendricks, Mae Whitman, Retta
Rating: 59% RT, 7.8/10 IMDb

This dramedy about three desperate women who took their lives into their hands in the most irresponsible way possible was surprisingly addictive. With stakes this high it’s unsurprising that the first season ended in a major cliffhanger. Season two will be available streaming after its March 3rd premiere date.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Type:  Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Mystery, Science-Fiction, Thriller, Action & Adventure
Release Date: 2018
Starring: Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Davis, Miranda Otto
Rating: 70% RT, 7.8/10 IMDb

This retelling of the Sabrina comic managed to impress fans who were eagerly anticipating its arrival. When it comes to the mid-season hiatus, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is truly testing its fans patience. Part two of the first season doesn’t come back until April.

iZombie
Type:  Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Comedy, Science-Fiction, Action & Adventure, Crime
Release Date: 2015
Starring: Rose McIver, David Anders, Robert Buckley
Rating: 96% RT, 7.9/10 IMDb

The quirky of a Seattle med-student-turned-zombie hasn’t lost an ounce of charm in the four seasons its been on air. This unlikely little gem premieres its 5th and final season this coming May 2nd.

Stranger Things
Type: Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Mystery, Science-Fiction, Thriller, Action & Adventure
Release Date: 2016
Starring: Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard
Rating: 95% RT, 8.9/10 IMDb

When you have to wait almost two years for a new episode, it’s almost like the fabric of reality begins to shift and you start to wonder whether or not it was all just a dream, to begin with. In the case of the Netflix hit Stranger Things (slated to return this July 4th), that may actually be true.

Better Call Saul
Type: Comedy, Drama, Crime
Release Date: 2015
Starring: Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Patrick Fabian+
Rating: 97%, 8.7/10 IMDb

While we’re playing fast and loose with the morals, Better Call Saul is going above and beyond the call of duty. Keeping the legacy of Breaking Bad alive, this dramedy is easily one of the best on television right now. The show is expected to return to airwaves (and streaming services) sometime later this year.
