Plot and setting
Twilight is set in Forks, Washington, a small town where 17-year-old Bella moves from Phoenix, Arizona, with her mother, Renee Dwyer, and police chief father, Charlie Swan. She encounters Edward Cullen, a vampire who actively stays away from people to hide his identity. However, Bella and Edward gradually connect, and Edward eventually reveals himself as a vampire. Despite his initial reluctance to pursue a relationship with Bella, she refuses to stay away from him. Edward’s family, all vampires, accept Bella into their family. They warn her of the danger of pursuing a relationship with a vampire, and Edward struggles to contain his thirst for her blood.
Jacob Black, a close friend of Bella’s and a member of the Quileute tribe, discovers the truth about Edward and his family. Jacob unsuccessfully tries to derail their relationship to win Bella’s affection for himself. To protect Bella, Edward, and his family, the Cullens, and Jacob’s tribe join forces to battle a group of powerful vampires led by James. Edward and Bella eventually defeat James, who pursues Bella to kill her. It is only with the intervention of the Quileute tribe that James is killed, and Bella and Edward can finally be together.
