Cast of 1883

From the Wainwrights’ struggles to the Turners’ ambitions, 1883 paints a vivid picture of life in a small Yorkshire town in the late 1800s. The cast of 1883 is a strong and talented group of actors who bring the show’s characters to life and make 1883 one of the past decade’s most popular British historical dramas.

The Turners

At the heart of 1883 are the wealthy Turner family. Led by patriarch John Turner, the Turners are a powerful family in Briercliffe, owning the local mill and controlling much of the town’s industry and commerce. John is a hardworking and ambitious man who is determined to make a better life for his family. His wife, Alice, is a loving and devoted mother, although she struggles to cope with her husband’s ambition and his increasingly distant manner.

John and Alice have three children: Tom, Daisy, and Alice’s stepson, Arthur. Tom is a bright and hardworking young man who shows the same ambition as his father. He is determined to take the family business to the next level, even if it means leaving Briercliffe behind. Daisy is a rebellious and independent young woman who is determined to make her own way in the world, despite her family’s expectations. Arthur is a kind and gentle soul who loves his family but is often overlooked in favor of Tom.

The Wainwrights

The Wainwrights are the polar opposite of the Turners. They are a struggling family of coal miners who is barely scraping by. At the head of the family is patriarch William, a hardworking and proud man who is determined to provide a better life for his family. His wife, Elizabeth, is a loving mother and wife, although she struggles to cope with the harsh realities of life in Briercliffe. William and Elizabeth have six children: Sarah, Jack, Rebecca, Joshua, Martha, and the youngest, Mary.

Sarah is the eldest and is determined to help her family get by, often taking on extra work to supplement the family income. Jack is a kind and gentle boy who loves his family but is often overlooked in favor of his siblings. Rebecca is a bright, independent young woman who dreams of a better life for her family. Joshua is a strong, loyal young man who works hard to help his family. Martha is a gentle and loving soul who loves her family but is often overshadowed by her siblings. And Mary is the youngest and most beloved of the Wainwrights; she is determined to make a better life for her family.

The Other Residents of Briercliffe

In addition to the Turner and Wainwright families, 1883 introduces a host of other characters who inhabit Briercliffe. There’s the formidable Lady Belmont, who is determined to keep the Turners in her good graces. There’s the kindly Reverend Miller, who is determined to keep the peace in the town. There’s the mysterious Gypsy, who appears to have some kind of magical power. And there’s the gruff but good-hearted George, who is determined to make a better life for his family.
