“The Miseducation of Cameron Post” starring Chloë Grace Moretz.

It’s been nearly 10 years since Chloë Grace Moretz wowed audiences as Hit Girl in Kick-Ass and even longer since she made her film debut. Since then, she has not slowed down at all, making on average 3 films a year since 2005. It may not seem like it, but that makes Moretz an old pro… though she is by no means “old.” She’s turning 22 today, and we are here to celebrate her with 7 of our favorite Chloë Grace Moretz movies.

(500) Days of Summer
Type: Drama, Comedy, Romance
Release Date: 2009
Director: Marc Webb
Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel, Chloë Grace Moretz
Rating: 85% RT, 7.7/10 IMDb

If you completely forgot that 12-year-old Chloë was in this movie, you’re not alone. This story about a lighthearted (yet doomed) romance didn’t exactly focus on Chloë’s character. But as a scene-stealing bit player in one of the biggest romances of 2009, she certainly made an impression on casting directors, because the very next year, the girl was everywhere.

Let Me In
Type: Horror, Fantasy, Thriller, Drama
Release Date: 2010
Director: Matt Reeves
Starring: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chloë Grace Moretz, Richard Jenkins
Rating: 88% RT, 7.1/10 IMDb

This remake of a 2008 Swedish film tells the story of a young boy bullied by his peers, who meets a new neighbor who is anything but an ordinary girl. While fans of the original film were skeptical, this version managed to impress nonetheless.

Kick-Ass
Type: Crime, Action & Adventure, Comedy
Release Date: 2010
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Rating: 75%, 7.6/10 IMDb

It should be no surprise that Kick-Ass is the film that more or less made Moretz, 11 years old at the time, a household name. It was fun, flashy, and of course, there was that purple wig and all the swearing.

Laggies
Type: Drama, Comedy, Romance
Release Date: 2014
Director: Lynn Shelton
Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Keira Knightley, Sam Rockwell
Rating: 54% RT, 6.3/10 IMDb

The story goes, wayward post-grad befriends the teenage girl and then maybe falls for her dad. Moretz here plays the teen (of course) and she’s got the formidable Keira Knightley and Sam Rockwell backing her up on the other two roles. This quirky film is full of heart, and it’s a shame that it flew so far under the radar because it really is a treat to watch.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post
Type:  Drama, Romance, LGBTQ
Release Date: 2018
Director: Desiree Akhaven
Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, John Gallagher Jr., Sasha Lane
Rating: 87% RT, 6.7/10 IMDb

One of last year’s best films, The Miseducation of Cameron Post stars Moretz in the titular role, a teenager forced by her parents into a gay conversion camp and who forms strong bonds with other kids like her. Conversion therapy is still legal in most states, so even though this is set in the 1990s, this film still very much reflects the reality that we live in today. The film’s timely release and underlying optimism are two of its strongest points.

The Poker House
Type: Drama, Independent
Release Date: 2008
Director: Lori Petty
Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Selma Blair, Chloë Grace Moretz
Rating: 57% RT, 6.4/10 IMDb

This is an early role, both for Moretz and for the film’s star, Jennifer Lawrence. The story of three sisters growing up in a home crawling with gamblers, thieves, and johns, is predictably not a happy tale. But it gave these young actresses a chance to impress and impress us they do.

Clouds of Sils Maria
Type: Drama
Release Date: 2014
Director: Olivier Assayas
Starring: Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, Chloë Grace Moretz
Rating: 90% RT, 6.7/10 IMDb

Clouds of Sils Maria, by French director Olivier Assayas, puts Moretz in perhaps her most serious role to date. An engrossing slow burn, the film is in some ways about the rivalry between a former ingenue and her would-be replacement, but there is a lot more here to chew on.
