Rick and Morty Season 4: Everything You Need to Know

After an agonizing wait, Rick and Morty creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland reached a deal with Adult Swim to produce a whopping 70 more episodes of the cult hit series. That’s a whole lot of wild, dimension-hopping adventures to come, and it’s safe to say the fans are pleased. In addition to that 70-episode renewal, the writers are hard at work on Rick and Morty Season 4.

In early June, the show’s official Facebook page revealed that the gang’s back in action with a behind-the-scenes video from Season 3. (You didn’t expect the writers to share spoilers this early did you?)

Even though the writers are working hard, Rick and Morty season four likely won’t be premiering for a while yet. However, that just gives fans extra time to catch up on other animated classics like Futurama, the early years of The Simpsons, Bojack Horseman, and Adventure Time. No, nothing can quite live up to drunken antics of Rick and his timid nephew Morty, but there’s more than enough quality animation out there to keep fans occupied until the premiere.

When Will Season 4 Premiere?

If you make like Peter Pan and think positive thoughts, the best estimate is late 2019. However, it could be longer than that. Even though Season 3 ended in 2017, the Rick and Morty team just got back to work this summer. It takes time to break the stories, animate the series, and record the voice performances. Hopefully, Adult Swim will announce an official release date soon, but for now, fans can take heart in knowing that Season 4 is actually happening.

How Many Episodes Will Be in Season 4?

The past three seasons have included 10 episodes each, but in a 2017 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harmon suggested future seasons could contain more episodes. He told the publication, “I would like to think I’ve learned enough from my mistakes in season 3 that we could definitely do 14 now, but then I have to say, ‘Yeah but you’re the guy who says we can do 14 who turned out to be wrong so we’re not listening to you now.’ The nice healthy way to approach this is I want to prove it with the first 10 of season 4 — prove it to ourselves, to production, to the network — that it’s so easy that we’ll earn additional episodes.”

Harmon and Roiland are in a different position this time around. Unlike with previous seasons, they have a long-term deal in place. During an in-depth interview with GQ, Harmon explained the importance of the 70-episode renewal. “I can finally actually breathe and be as excited as I’ve wanted to be,” he said. For Harmon and Roiland, the renewal is about creative freedom and a sense of job security. These two things together could contribute to shorter wait times between seasons in the future.

Are There Any Teasers Yet?

Nope. At this early stage of the process, Rick and Morty’s next batch of adventures are still being formed. Sadly, that means there aren’t any teasers to share. On the upside, Harmon and Roiland did film an Instagram video where they take a shower together. That’s an upside, right?

Harmon seems adamant about not wanting the series to become overly serialized. For him, the goal is to have enough serialization to keep fans coming back for more, while also keeping things episodic on the whole. (Think Doctor Who, but way weirder.) When EW asked Harmon about his plans for future seasons, he was straightforward about not having an over-arching endgame in mind. He revealed,

“We try to keep that to a minimum if not zero. People are always disappointed to hear that because part of the culture of television — particularly binge-worthy obsessive serialized television — is this idea that there’s a larger truth unfolding and you can decode it and figure it out. I don’t want people to be upset to know that that’s what we’re doing too. The way we see it, until something [is revealed in the show], it’s just one of a million possibilities.”

That means Season 4 could be about anything, up to and including the seemingly tabled divorce between Jerry and Beth. Also, Kanye West might show up at some point. Hey, no one’s ever accused Rick and Morty of being predictable.
