Before we completely put the second quarter behind us – the team at Reelgood pulled some data on what the most popular subscription VoD services were, as well as a list of the most-watched movies and TV shows among 2 million Reelgood users in the United States from April 1 to June 30, 2020.
First, for comparison, here is what the share of streaming looked like in Q1 of 2020:
Then, Reelgood determined what the top 5 most popular SVoD platforms were for the past three months:
- For this analysis, they looked at which subscription streaming services generated the most initiated streams on the Reelgood platform based on data collected from over 2 million U.S. users and 32 million interactions.
- Since HBO Max only launched around late May, the team took the liberty of combining its share of streaming with HBO Now for the entire Q2. Barring that, however, HBO Max would still have come in fifth with 3.2% overall streaming share.
To try and even the playing field, they pulled data on the streaming share of SVoD platforms for just the month of June:
Netflix remains the dominant player, with Prime Video close behind. Hulu consistently comes in third, while HBO Max and Disney+ compete for the fourth spot.
Next, Reelgood found out what the 20 most-watched TV shows were for Q2 of 2020 and how many of them were streaming on Netflix (during Q2) and/or were Netflix Originals:
Eleven out of the top 20 TV shows come from Netflix, eight of which are Originals.
Finally, the same was done for movies to determine which films were the most-watched by millions of users for Q2 of 2020:
