Your TV New Year’s Resolution: Watch Bill Hader in “Barry” from HBO.

With a-billion-and-one television shows on the market these days, it’s easy to find yourself wasting time on a show that’s just not up to snuff. Well, now it’s time to put an end to that nasty habit by kicking off a New Year’s TV Resolution.

To get you started, here are 10 shows that you absolutely should watch this year.

BoJack Horseman
Type: Animation, Comedy, Drama
Release Date: 2014
Starring: Will Arnett, Aaron Paul, Allison Brie

A late-adopter to adult animated series, BoJack Horseman won us over from the word go. This Will Arnett-helmed series is hilarious and socially conscious. And it accomplishes all of this without once sacrificing the laughs.

Atlanta
Type: Comedy, Drama
Release Date: 2016
Starring: Donald Glover, Brian Tyree Henry, Keith Stanfield

First of all, Donald Glover is one of the most talented and fearless performers on the scene. His series Atlanta has been a major critical success, with a healthy amount of award nominations and wins to its name. If you haven’t seen this FX series yet, we’re not sure what you’re waiting for.

Big Little Lies
Type: Crime, Drama, Mystery
Release Date: 2017
Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley

This 2017 series by David E. Kelley is chock full of Hollywood A-Listers. What audiences first assumed would be a limited series turned out to be so successful that it inspired the network and the showrunner to bring it back for another season – complete with the original cast. With the second season premiering in 2019, now is the perfect time to add this murder-mystery to your repertoire.

Younger
Type: Comedy, Drama, Romance
Release Date: 2015
Starring: Sutton Foster, Hilary Duff, Debi Mazar

This 2014 TVLand-turned-Paramount series is our recommendation for those of you looking for something a little bit lighter to add to your line-up. Younger is marathon material times ten. With the multi-talented Sutton Foster in the lead role and an undeniably likable cast backing her up, you really can’t go wrong with this one.

True Detective
Type: Crime, Drama, Mystery, Thriller
Release Date: 2014
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Michelle Monaghan, Woody Harrelson

The first two seasons of True Detective were 100% binge-worthy. And with Mahershala Ali (you heard me!) leading the upcoming third season, now might be a good time to finally sit down and watch this show.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Type: Drama, Comedy
Release Date: 2017
Starring: Rachel Brosahan, Alex Borstein, Michael Zegen

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel had a stellar first season, which means that the second season truly had a lot to live up to. In our opinion, season two knocked it right out of the park. If you’re looking to get geared up for the show’s inevitable third season, you’ll have plenty of time to catch-up if you start this January.

 The Good Place
Type: Drama, Romance, Comedy, Fantasy, Science-Fiction
Release Date: 2016
Starring: Kristen Bell, Ted Danson, William Jackson Harper

Watching The Good Place will actually make you a better person. What more do you need to know? If you’re feeling a bit skeptical, stream a few episodes and you’ll have a great time finding out whether or not that statement is a load of bullshirt.

Killing Eve
Type:  Crime, Drama, LGBTQ, Thriller
Release Date: 2018
Starring: Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Fiona Shaw

Seductive, sleek, and compelling, Killing Eve is a dark tale of an assassin and the security consultant sent to track her down.

Barry
Type: Comedy, Crime, Drama
Release Date: 2018
Starring: Bill Hader, Stephen Root, Henry Winkler

While we’re discussing hitmen, let’s talk a little bit about HBO’s Barry. Possibly no other show received so much universal praise as this hilarious comedy the story of a hitman gone to Hollywood. This show has finally given Bill Hader a chance to really shine an,d thankfully, has been renewed for season 2.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Type: Action & Adventure, Drama, Romance, Comedy, Fantasy, Science-Fiction, Thriller
Release Date: 2018
Starring: Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Davis, Miranda Otto

With Chilling Adventures of Sabrina already renewed for its second to fourth seasons, you might as well sit back and get comfortable. While this show is considerably darker, if you’re a fan of Riverdale odds are you’re going to like this. The first season and Christmas special blew audiences away, and the best is yet to come.
