Doula: A True Crime Synopsis

Doula: A True Crime begins with an extraordinary case that unfolded in Ontario during 2022. Kaitlyn Braun, then 24, contacted more than 40 doulas, telling them she had been sexually assaulted and was in her third trimester carrying a stillborn child. Many doulas responded with compassion, offering pro bono care, remote assistance and even round-the-clock in-person support. As time passed, however, parts of Braun’s story began to unravel and the doulas started comparing their experiences. Their search for answers grew into an effort to attract the attention of authorities and a TikTok campaign, while the case ultimately resulted in 53 criminal charges. From Episode 2 onward, Braun herself breaks her silence, allowing the documentary to move beyond the question of what happened toward the more complicated questions of how and why. Rather than offering an easy explanation, the series examines the limits of empathy, trust and compassion and the consequences that can follow when those instincts are exploited.
