8 Movies to Watch with Dad After the Barbecue

Here’s your official reminder from all of us at Reelgood that Father’s Day is this Sunday, June 17th. Sure your dad would appreciate it if you called him more often, but what he’d really love are these socks! (You’re welcome.)

The traditional celebration is, of course, a barbecue. What does a dad love more than super tender, slightly charred meat? Answer: Hanging out with his kids, of course! And what better way to pass the time than with a good dad-centric movie or two? So without further ado, here’s a list of movies to watch with your dad this Father’s Day weekend.

Field of Dreams – Rent or buy from $2.99 and up.  

There’s been a lot of talk of the Mandela effect in pop culture, specifically about misremembered lines. One of the more famous of those lines is in Field of Dreams. The ethereal voice that calls out over the cornfield is saying “If you build it, he will come.” (Not “they will come.”) This movie is not just a movie about a man and a baseball field, but about a son trying to reconnect with his father.

Road to Perdition – Rent or buy from $2.99 and up.  

In Road to Perdition, Tom Hanks (the most dad-ish of all movie dads) plays a hired-hand, Mike Sullivan, who works for a very dangerous man. When his young son sees something he’s not supposed to, Mike has no choice but to protect his own.

Finding Nemo – Rent or buy from $2.99 and up.  

This animated feature about a father who goes on a daring search for his son is always great for the kids to watch with dad, even if they’ve seen it a million times already.

Interstellar – DirecTV Now | FX | Fox | Epix

Easily the darkest film in the bunch, Interstellar deals with space travel, time travel, and family. At its core, it is about a complicated father/daughter relationship, played (in varying timelines) by Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain.

When his daughter announces her upcoming wedding, George has a hard time coming to terms with the fact that his little girl is all grown up. An all-star cast, with Diane Keaton and Steve Martin leading the bunch, brings this light-hearted 1991 comedy to life.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – Amazon Prime | Epix  

The third installment in the Indiana Jones series brings back Harrison Ford as the titular archaeologist and introduces his father, Henry Jones Sr., played by none other than Sean Connery. The two have a tumultuous relationship at the start but must stick together in order to retrieve the Holy Grail before the bad guys do.

Three Men and a Baby – Rent or buy from $2.99 and up.

This film stars Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, and Ted Danson as roommates who end up taking care of a baby girl named Mary after she is abandoned at their loft. Reluctant and inexperienced, each of them ends up falling in love with the little girl in due time. The scene where all three guys sing her to sleep is iconic. If you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, you can check out the sequel: Three Men and a Little Lady.

Daddy’s Home – Amazon Prime | Epix | Hulu

Brad (Will Ferrell) is settling in nicely with his new wife and step-children when his wife’s ex-hubby Dusty (Mark Wahlberg) shows up. The two men could not be more different, and watching them try to outdo each other is a major part of this movie’s charm. The other is watching them realize that they actually really like each other. Aw, dads! (Don’t forget about the equally charming sequel: Daddy’s Home 2!)
