9 Alien Invasion Movies to Watch This Independence Day

Watch independence day this 4th of july
Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum in “Independence Day” from 20th Century Fox.

The 4th of July is the annual celebration of the birth of the United States of America and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. For those of you that have never read the Declaration of Independence, it goes a little something like this: “…we hereby pledge that every July 4th we will drink beer, invite cousin Walter to the barbecue no matter how weird or smelly he gets, cook as many ribs as we can get our hands on, eat potato salad even though we secretly hate potato salad, try not to get our hands blown off while setting off bottle rockets, and watch as many kick-ass alien invasion movies as we can.”

All jokes aside, we have nothing but respect for our founding fathers. For those who are interested, the actual Declaration of Independence can be read here.

Independence Day – Starz

This classic 1996 alien invasion movie starring Will Smith, Harry Connick Jr., Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman never gets old! And is obviously the entire reason for this post.

Mars Attacks! – Film Struck

When a seemingly peaceful alien presence turns sour in this 1996 Tim Burton comedy, the government threatens nuclear retaliation. This all-star cast is going to take more than one breath to pronounce. Don’t believe me? Try it: Lukas Haas, Natalie Portman, Jack Black, Pam Grier, Christina Applegate, Glenn Close, Jack Nicholson, Sarah Jessica-Parker, Pierce Brosnan, Danny Devito, Michael J. Fox, Annette Benning, Martin Short, and Tom Jones.

War of the Worlds – Tubi TV

This 2005 Steven Spielberg film is based on War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. The film stars Tom Cruise, Justin Chatwin, and Dakota Fanning. As predicted by the title of this article, Tom and his family must face the unthinkable: a sudden and unexpected alien invasion.

10 Cloverfield Lane – Amazon Prime | Hulu | Epix

Spoiler alert, this movie is on this list, which means… In case the movie’s poster didn’t already give it away, 10 Cloverfield Lane is indeed an alien invasion film.

Signs – Rent or buy from $2.99 and up.

“Everybody in this family just needs to calm down and eat some fruit or something.” Sure, that’ll help us defeat the aliens, Dad! One of M. Night Shyamalan’s earlier, more critically acclaimed works, Signs is definitely one for the books.

Attack the Block – Crackle

If you haven’t seen Attack the Block, trust me, you need to. The film stars John Boyega, who was also in a little franchise called Star Wars, in his breakout role. A group of kids living in a council estate in south London finds what they believe to be an alien from outer space. Lucky for them, it’s dead. When more of them show up looking for their little friend, the kids must fight back.

Pacific Rim – Rent or buy from $2.99 and up.

Directed by Guillermo del Toro, this movie takes battling an alien invasion to new depths. In order to protect humanity from ancient aliens that invaded long ago, mankind created giant fighting robots that are piloted by two humans concurrently. Pacific Rim stars Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam.

Slither – Starz

Ew, is the appropriate response. Slither is a horror comedy but is also what some might call a “gross-out” comedy. A new twist on the Body Snatchers, Slither stars Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks and some seriously icky creepy crawlers.

Dude, Where’s My Car – HBO

Wait, what? Dude, Where’s My Car is an alien movie? (Just watch it! You’ll see what I mean.)
