7 Netflix Series You May Not Be Watching (But Probably Should Be)

The cast of Queer Eye from Netflix.

Keep up with me, now. In case you haven’t noticed, it can be a little bit daunting keeping track of just how many original series that Netflix is responsible for. The behemoth internet streaming service boasts upwards of 700 original series, if Variety is to be believed. (For what it’s worth, despite the discrepancy between what they own and what they actually produce, we totally trust them.)

Well, why are you telling me? This is important because Netflix’s original series and movies are going to be the company’s biggest draw when Disney finally pulls the plug.

With so much to offer, and with so much mystery surrounding their ratings, it’s hard to know, without traditional water-cooler banter, which of their programs are worth checking out.

From Lost in Space to The Confession Tapes, Netflix is killing it right now. For those of you who just don’t know where to start, here are 7 Netflix series that are totally worth checking out.

Dark

Quiet, eerie, and stunningly beautiful, Dark is (you’re welcome) the only foreign-language series I’ll be recommending on this list. But oh, are those subtitles ever worth it? (Please turn off the dubbing to fully experience this show.) Set in a small town in Germany, this mystery series revolves around the suspicious disappearances of two of the town’s children.

Altered Carbon

Based on the book of the same name by Richard Morgan, Altered Carbon is an incredibly fun, futuristic sci-fi series, starring Joel Kinnaman, Martha Higareda, Dichen Lachman and James Purefoy. As a Kinnaman fan (shout-out to The Killing), I am actually the first to question his creative choices. I thought this would be another disappointment, but I was pleasantly surprised. Altered Carbon will never be prestige TV, but the first 10-episode season is prime binge material.

Queer Eye

Let’s unpack that. Queer Eye is back and dare I say it’s even better than the original? Smite me for blasphemy all you want, but I’m sticking to that statement. The new Fab Five is truly… well? Fab! I love every single one of them, and trust me, I’m not picking favorites when I say that design expert Bobby Berk can come redecorate my apartment anytime he wants. What’s lovely about this show is that at its core it’s about connecting to people and there will be moments in nearly every episode that will touch you very deeply.

Lovesick

I’m a little biased because as an old-school fan of Misfits, I was absolutely thrilled to see the lovely and amazing Antonia Thomas in another series. Thankfully, Lovesick is completely and utterly worth it.

On My Block

Starring almost entirely unknowns, On My Block, is probably one of the most easily enjoyable in Netflix’s repertoire and that, for me, is a major part of its appeal. Set in a predominantly hispanic and black neighborhood in South Central Los Angeles, this dramedy follows a group of teens as they navigate some very familiar territory: high school.

Wild Wild Country

Wild Wild Country is a 6-part documentary series that boasts a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. My enjoyment of this series is paramount to the fact that this is not a story I knew anything about. The picture this series paints is fascinating and terrifying and it does what all great documentaries at their core strive to do: reveals something fundamental about the human condition, no matter how mundane or ugly it truly is.

Nailed It!

I consider myself a pretty solid and creative cook, but when it comes to baking, it’s pretty much a non-starter. Sure I can whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies in a pinch, but if it involves pastry dough or god-forbid, decorating something? Not happening. If you’re like me, then this show is for you. Hilarious and entertaining, Nailed It!, puts everyday folks under the pressure-cooker environment of competitive baking.
