The only thing that goes together better than peanut butter and jelly is horror and comedy. It’s tempting to spend the Halloween season scaring yourself silly with hardcore horror movies, but if you can laugh while you’re being jump-scared, why not embrace it? Whether you’re a bit of a scaredy cat or just someone who appreciates the humor in being chased by zombies or haunted by ghosts, then you need to stream some horror comedies this holiday season.

From classics like Shaun of the Dead to lesser known gems you may have never heard of, the one thing all of these movies have in common is the ability to make you giggle and scream.

  1. Shaun of the Dead — Showtime

Can Halloween even come if you don’t watch Simon Pegg and Nick Frost fight off zombies and growing up in Shaun of the Dead? All of the movies in the Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy are perfect for comedy and horror fans, but the other two can’t quite reach the level of perfection this zombie-slacker film attains.

2. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil — Shudder/Hulu

The scary rednecks genre gets flipped on its head in this goofy bit of movie perfection.

3. Little Evil — Netflix

Adam Scott marries a woman he loves with a kid who hates him. That kid also happens to be the Antichrist. Hilarity and father-son bonding ensues.

4. The Final Girls — DirecTV/Freeform

If you’re going to get trapped in a movie, a horror film would probably not be your first choice. But if it’s going to happen, there are worse ones to be trapped in than Camp Bloodbath. The Final Girls is not only underrated, it has a surprisingly emotional arc that might even make you reach for the tissues.

5. Grabbers — Hulu/Shudder/Doc Club

Aliens arrive in Ireland, and the residents are so not impressed.

6. Tremors — Cinemax

Kevin Bacon’s Tremors is downright iconic at this point. Forget the sequels, nothing can ever top the anxiety-inducing premise of the original, or the dynamic between Val and Earl.

7. Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel — HBO

A normal night at the bar turns into a time travel nightmare for three friends who are so not prepared for the consequences. Chris O’Dowd is pitch perfect in this sci-fi/horror hybrid that mixes existential dread with jokes about breaking the time-space continuum.

8. Little Shop of Horrors — Hulu

Music, madness, and a giant plant with a taste for flesh — what more could a horror fan ask for?

9. Rubber — Monsters Nightmares

You will never see a movie more absurd than Rubber. While your mileage may vary, you have to admit there’s only one movie out there about an evil tire.

10. Cockneys vs. Zombies — Shout Factory TV/Vudu

A direct descendant of Shaun of the Dead, Cockneys vs. Zombies pits the elderly of the East End against the undead. And yes, it’s as cool as it sounds.

11. What We Do in the Shadows — Amazon Prime

This is the absolute best use of the found footage genre. Documentary filmmakers turn their cameras on a group of vampire roommates, and the results are delightfully bonkers.

12. Housebound — Netflix

Being sentenced to house arrest is bad enough without an evil spirit tagging along, but that’s exactly what the hero of this sly haunted house tale.

Settle down with your favorite Halloween candy and stream one of these horror comedies this weekend, because there’s nothing quite as fun as shrieking with laughter at this time of the year.
