I don’t know if you guys have noticed, but the television landscape right now is an absolute mecca of quirky half-hour comedies. They are taking over, getting renewed left and right, and in some cases getting canceled and then picked up by other networks three and a half (a half!) minutes later. (Good job, Brooklyn Nine-Nine!) These shows are succeeding leaps and bounds beyond traditional family-themed sitcoms, and the GP is eating it up.

In case you haven’t hopped on the quirky sitcoms train yet, we’ve got your ticket to ride right here!

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a comedy about Brooklyn’s 99th police precinct, is beloved by its fans and will be going into its sixth season on a new network (NBC) later this year. The show stars Andy Samberg, Melissa Fumero, Chelsea Peretti, Terry Crews, and Andre Braugher.

Superstore

Superstore is set in a fictional big-box store known as Cloud 9 (aka Walmart) and stars America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, and Mark McKinney. The store has even made an appearance on other NBC shows like Good Girls. Superstore will be returning for its fourth season, presumably this coming fall.

The Good Place

Kristen Bell and Ted Danson star in this hilarious comedy set in the afterlife. Eleanor (Bell) is killed in a freak accident and wakes up being introduced to her new home by her guide, Michael (Danson). Luckily for Eleanor, she has gone to The Good Place. All she has to do is not let it slip that she’s actually an unwitting imposter.

A.P. Bio

A.P. Bio just finished its first season and was renewed for a second by NBC. The show follows a disgruntled former Harvard philosophy professor (Glenn Howerton) who has returned to his hometown and begrudgingly taken a job at his old high school. The show also stars fan-favorite Patton Oswalt as the high school principal.

LA to Vegas

LA to Vegas follows the regulars and flight crew of the fictional Jackpot Air’s weekend LA to Vegas route. Starring Dylan McDermott, Ed Weeks (from The Mindy Project), Nathan Lee Graham, and Kim Matula – LA to Vegas has a good shot at getting picked up for a second season.

People of Earth

An alien abductee support group is the backdrop for TBS’s peculiar, yet addicting, People of Earth. Starring Ana Gasteyer, Wyatt Cenac, and Oscar Nunez (from The Office), this sophomore show has already been picked up for a third season.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

You can take the girl out of the underground bunker, but you can’t take the… wait, that’s not right. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, starring Ellie Kemper and the incomparable Tituss Burgess, has been going strong on Netflix for three seasons now. And get ready fans, because season four will be premiering in just a couple of weeks (May 30th 2018).

Trial and Error

John Lithgow is a titan of “quirky comedies” as the former lead in NBC’s very quirky 3rd Rock from the Sun. In Trial and Error, Lithgow returns to the genre as a clueless professor who has been accused of murdering his wife. It almost sounds like the premise of a drama, but trust me, Trial and Error will have you bowled over with laughter.

Splitting Up Together

Fans of The Office were undoubtedly thrilled to see Jenna Fischer back on the sitcom circuit. Here she stars as a mother of three who is attempting to co-parent her children when her marriage fails. The twist being that her ex, played by the always-easy-on-the-eyes Oliver Hudson, is still living in the house with them.

The Guest Book

The Guest Book is another TBS show to make this list and is about the employees and guests staying at a group of vacation cottages in a small mountain village. Starring Garret Dillahunt (from Raising Hope) and Eddie Steeples, the show is an anthology series focusing on a different cottage guest each week. The show has been renewed for a second season.
