10 Movies To Cure Your Winter Olympics Withdrawals

Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton in “Eddie the Eagle” from 20th Century Fox

The Olympics can be a whirlwind of emotions. We’re up, we’re down. There are times when we feel like we’re right there on the ice with John Shuster of the men’s curling team, cheering them on as they bring home the gold. We are utterly crushed when Nathan Chen fumbles in his short program, and beyond ecstatic when he comes back to kill it (just barely missing a medal) in his long program, breaking records along the way. And let’s not even talk about Chloe Kim, okay? The girl is a phenom in the truest sense of the word.

There is just something about the Olympics that grabs us and doesn’t let go. Sure, there are those of us who might need a little breather after the closing ceremony comes to an end. But for some of us?

It’s. Not. Enough! We need more.

This one goes out to all of you who are going through Olympics withdrawals right now. Reelgood’s got you covered, and we’re here to point you towards some great titles that will help ease the pain of those end-of-Olympics blues.

Eddie the Eagle — Cinemax

Can you say underdog of epic proportions? This is the most recent film on the list, and if you love ski jumping, or even if the very idea terrifies you, you won’t be able to resist cheering along by the film’s end. I won’t spoil how the real “Eddie” ended his Olympic dream, but I will say that this movie, almost more than most on this list, will definitely quench your thirst for all things Winter Olympics.

The Cutting Edge — Amazon Prime/Hulu/Epix

Who can resist the classic tale of beauty (read: figure skater) and the beast (read: hockey player)? Especially when competitive pairs figure skating is involved. This one might be my absolute favorite on this list. D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly have some seriously great love/hate chemistry here. If you’re up for it, this one’s also got a slew of follow-ups, although none of them are about the original characters. There’s The Cutting Edge: Going for the Gold, The Cutting Edge 3: Chasing the Dream, and The Cutting Edge: Fire & Ice.

Slap Shot — Starz/DirecTV Now

So Slap Shot is, admittedly, a bit old school campy comedy, but it’s got Paul Newman and it definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously. (In case you couldn’t tell by the title.) How can you resist?

Cool Runnings — Netflix

“I am feeling very Olympic today.” That line is more or less the theme for this post, and of course it comes from Cool Runnings — one of my personal favorites on the list. This story of The Little Jamaican Bobsled Team That Could (with John Candy as their coach!) is another underdog tale that will totally melt your heart, no matter the outcome.

The Mighty Ducks — Rent or Buy from $2.99 & Up

Starring Emilio Estevez, and Pacey Witter himself, Joshua Jackson, this 1992 hockey flick is not just about persevering your shortcomings, but it’s also about the bond between teammates and the gift of a great coach. Don’t forget (how could you?) that there are two sequels to this classic: D2: The Mighty Ducks and D3: The Mighty Ducks.

Miracle — Showtime

“Do you believe in miracles?!?” If you’re someone who doesn’t know where that line was famously uttered, then now is the time to learn. The story of the USA men’s hockey team (spoiler alert) triumphing over Russia in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, in a game dubbed the “miracle on ice” is one of the all time greatest sports stories in modern history.

Blades of Glory — Rent or Buy from $2.99 & Up

If the star-studded cast (Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, Jon Heder, Will Arnett) is not enough to get you, then I don’t know what is. This one, like most Ferrell vehicles is turned up to 11 the entire time. And there’s ice skating and glitter! Win-win.

Ice Princess — HBO/DirecTV Now

Okay, so starting figure skating as a high schooler and landing a triple based on some complicated math equation rather than years of careful practice may not be the most realistic plotline you’ve ever heard. But, come on! That is adorable. Uh. Dor. Uh. Bull. And it’s got Joan Cusack for crying out loud. I dare you to resist.

Men with Brooms — Tubi TV

Curling! I feel like that’s all I really should have to say but just in case that’s not enough. Canada! Paul Gross! And did we mention: Curling?

Mystery, Alaska — Rent or Buy from $2.99 & Up

This is the last hockey movie on the list, but certainly not the least. The setting here is breathtakingly gorgeous and the small-town vibe will definitely help you recover from your Olympic stupor. It’s basically Stars Hollow with hockey. Well… sort of. By the film’s end, you may be planning your move to a quirky little Alaskan village, surrounded by glaciers, but at least you’ll be too busy packing to remember how much you miss the Olympics.
